Student Services (Studentwerk)
The "Studentenwerk" is a public-law institution, which is responsible for all students and student needs. It manages the cafeterias, the student restaurants (Mensa), takes care of special rates on public transport (Semesterticket), accommodation, financial assistance, and cultural events. All enrolled students pay a semester fee of approximately 60-80 € as a contribution to the funding of these services.
The Studentwerk in Germany cannot be compared with a 'Student Union' in the UK or USA, which offer many events for students. For students at Reutlingen University, HfWU Nürtingen-Geislingen, and HFR, the Studentwerk is Tübingen-Hohenheim. The Studentwerk Ulm services students at Hochschule Ulm.
