Jobs and Work Permits

As of 2005 international students who do not come from the EU or EFTA are allowed to work 90 full or 180 half  (4 hours daily) days in a year, but not more than 20 hours per week during the lecture period. During vacation time (between semesters) international students are allowed to work up to 40 hours a week. Students are allowed to work on campus in a field related to their study program for a maximum of 80 hours per month.

Students from EU member states have unlimited permission to work in Germany without work permit. These students are subject to the same conditions that apply to German students. There are also special arrangements with Switzerland and EFTA countries.

Of course, students can also work as an intern while they study. In this case they will receive a special work permit. The internship must be an integral part of their study programme in Germany. If the internship is voluntary, it will be counted as part of the 180 half days regulation.

Up to one year after graduation students may work under the same conditions as with the student status.

Job offers for students can be found on all notice boards, at job centres or in local newspapers.
